The Lake Charles Black Heritage Gallery is honored to display the artwork of Mr. James Hunter. Mr. Hunter started his art career watching his grandmother, who painted portraits that displayed the life she knew and lived. The expressive colors will transform the viewer into her world of work, worship, and celebration of life with her tribe, her family, and friends.
Today, Mr. Hunter continues his grandmother’s legacy. “All of this, what you see is pretty much what she lived with. She painted her life story… In her mind, that’s the way she created it, that’s the way she looked at it, so she put her life story in her paintings.”
Mr. Hunter explained, “It’s basically her story, I’m just trying to keep her legend going. It’s fun. I love it, I’ve been doing it off and on for 20 years, going to different places. I like it.”
Stella Miller, the gallery director, said she is grateful to attorney Mark Delphin for recommending the work of Mr. James Hunter. The exhibition will be on display from June 2 until July 29 and features 24 of Hunter’s pieces.
